Who they are

Meet Matt

Kitchen spray painting in Leeds.

  1. A premium decorating firm whose problem was inconsistency rather than quality. Some weeks the phone would not stop and others went quiet for days. The work was good enough to charge properly for. The enquiries just did not arrive at a steady rate.

  2. Unpredictable is harder to run a business on than quiet. You cannot hire for it, you cannot plan around it, and in the slow weeks you take work you would rather have turned down, because you have no way of knowing what next week looks like.

  3. Kitchen spraying is also a job most people do not know exists. They know they hate their kitchen and they assume the options are live with it or rip it out. The business was competing less with other sprayers than with the idea of a full replacement.

The problem

Why the questions mattered more than the service

The obvious approach is to chase the phrase kitchen spraying and fight everyone else for it. We spent most of the effort somewhere else, on the questions people ask in the weeks before they are ready to pay anyone.

What paint actually lasts on a cabinet door. Whether any kitchen can be sprayed or only some. Whether it is worth doing at all compared with replacing the doors. These get searched far more often than the service itself does, and almost nobody in the trade writes about them, because writing them feels like giving the job away.

It is the opposite. Somebody asking whether their cabinets can be painted has not decided against paying a professional, they simply have not got that far yet, and being the page that answered them honestly is why they come back to you for the quote rather than to somebody else. Answering it also puts the business in front of people who had not yet worked out that spraying was an option, which is the part a competitor bidding on the service term never reaches.

The rest was structural. Kitchens, interior doors, garage doors, windows and uPVC each rank for different things and each needed their own page rather than a line on a services list. Leeds is where the workshop is, but the work comes from Harrogate, Wakefield, York and everywhere between, and each of those had to be said out loud rather than assumed.

The people who will pay for this are searching a question, not a service.

The work

What we did

We rebuilt the local SEO and the Google Business Profile so the quiet weeks stopped depending on luck. Kitchen unit refinishing, uPVC spraying, granite worktops, colour matching and door stripping each got treated as a thing someone searches for, because they are.

The thinking

The questions people ask before they hire

What paint, whether it lasts, whether their doors can be sprayed at all. These get searched far more than "kitchen spraying" does, and almost nobody in the trade writes about them.

One page per surface, not one page per job

Kitchens, doors, garage doors, windows and uPVC each rank for different things and each got their own page.

Yorkshire treated as a set of towns

Leeds is where they are. Harrogate, Wakefield, York and the rest are where the work is, and each needed saying out loud.

The craft

On-page
Titles and descriptions written for the search, headings structured so each page answers one thing properly.
Structured data
LocalBusiness markup with services and area. Every image has alt text, which on a trade sold through photographs is not a detail.
Citations
Name, address and phone consistent across the directories that feed Google.
Technical
Canonicals set, and thirty-nine internal links arranged so the town pages support the service pages.
Every week
A post to the profile, and every review answered.

If this sounds like your business

If your trade is something people do not yet know to search for, you are not really competing with the other firms who do it. You are competing with the assumption that the only option is to rip it out and start again.

That is a better position than it sounds, because the people who will eventually pay you are already searching. They are just asking a question rather than naming a service. Being the business that answers it plainly is how you end up on the shortlist before there is a shortlist.

The free analysis shows you what your future customers are actually typing in the weeks before they are ready to spend, and which of those questions nobody in your area has bothered to answer. You keep the recording either way.
